A Museum Quality Ming Dynasty Armchair.
This important armchair rivals anything in any museum collection of late Ming Dynasty furniture. Dating from the first half of the 17th century, it is built of tiele-mu (ironwood) and camphor in the southern “official's hat” style. The crest rail is embellished with an up-turning curl at either end, and the line of the arm-rests is especially pleasing. Further details are the protruding tenons, the delicate, straight stretchers, and the beaded cursive apron and front stretcher apron. All surfaces are original, but where the camphorwood splat was eaten away, it has been replaced with an edge of brass. This extraordinary piece measures 22 inches wide, by 17 inches deep, by 42 inches high. The price is $8,000.
