A Seventeenth Century Stone Head of Kwan Yin.
China, carved from sandstone. A crowned head of Kwan Yin with traces of the original yellow pigment; this Head would have once belonged to a highly important over-life size statue of Buddha from a large Chinese Temple. It is drilled at the bottom and comes mounted on a wooden plynth which is also included in the sale. SOLD.


A Ming Dynasty Limestone Buddha.
Circa 1600. This wonderful limestone sculpture invokes serenity in every aspect -- wonderful face, expressive eyes and a dignified posture. Like all great sculptures it is skillfully carved even from the back. He sits on a rootwood throne with a guardian food dog in front. The sculpture retains its original red, yellow and pink pigments.

Shou Lao, the God of Longevity and his attendant.
A fine example of early Ching period soapstone carving with wonderful deep patina. Circa 1720. At one time the back was inscribed with calligraphy which has been largely rubbed off by some previous owner who could not resist the wonderful feel of the aged stone.

Bamboo Carving of Zhongli Quan.
Circa 1880. One of the eight Immortals, Zhongli Quan is usually shown holding a fan and reprents the military man.

Zitan and Fossil Scholar's Screen.
Miniature screens, also known as scholar's screens, were placed on long narrow tables and were used by the scholar to contemplate nature. This screen, of marble and zitan, has within it a rare fossilized creature. The zitan frame is finely carved with raised scrollwork and one raised panel.

19th Century Clay Figure of a Fisherman.
Traditional clay sculpture from the southern Chinese province of Kwantung. Seated on a glazed log, his outstreached right hand would have held a bamboo fishing rod. The bottom of the figure shows the finger prints of the sculptor.
