A Lacquered Writing Desk, from Ning-Bo.
This beautiful desk has a combination of surfaces, an original black lacquer from the 1860s when it was built, and a red lacquer overlay that dates from about 100 years ago. The result is an extraordinarily rich working surface and a lovely patina. The desk was made in the city of Ning-Bo in south-east China, and among its attributes are two drawers with carved panel fronts, matching side panels, and fluted spandrels. The ornate horse-hoof feet are decorated with a geometric motif. The lock plates and elegantly-curled drawer pulls are all original, and the joinery is mitre and tenon. The desk measures 35 inches high, by 40 inches long, by 22 ¾ inches wide, and its price is $4,800.00. |
